Precision Swiss Engineering: Bioinspired Bat Robot Thing

Browsing through the IEEE Spectrum blogs, I found a pointer to an awesome flying robot. Evan Ackerman notes that this is a much improved follow on from earlier version.

In general, drones don’t excite me that much. I guess I worked through my own model aircraft phase before I went to college.

But this flying/waling bat thing from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne is truly, awesomely, cool!

There is nothing like a working demo to make the point!

Their paper in Bioinspiration & Biomimetics discusses their analysis and design inspired by vampire bat locomotion. They also point out that robot studies may lead to insights into possible evolutionary histories of natural systems.

Check out the details in their article.
